Dr. Robert Summerour: A Legacy of Compassionate Care & Musical Inspiration
Dr. Robert “Bob” Summerour, MD, founded Riverside Psychiatric Medical Group (RPMG) in 1982 as a beacon of compassionate outpatient psychiatric care in Riverside County, California. A 1971 graduate of Loma Linda University School of Medicine, he has dedicated over 50 years to treating complex mental health challenges in adults of all ages, making exceptional services accessible and effective.
As Medical Director, Dr. Summerour guides RPMG’s growth, overseeing seamless, integrated mental health support for thousands of insured patients across multiple plans. He also serves as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UC Riverside School of Medicine, mentoring future physicians, and maintains privileges at Pacific Grove Hospital to support inpatient care and ECT programs as needed.
Before medicine, Bob channeled his creative energy as guitarist, banjo player, and the “rebellious” voice of the legendary Wedgwood Trio (1964–1970s), a pioneering male vocal and instrumental ensemble in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Formed during his studies at Newbold College in England with fellow Southerners Jerry Hoyle and Don Vollmer (later Gary Evans), the trio revolutionized Adventist worship music by infusing folk, gospel, and contemporary sounds into youth-oriented performances. They released multiple albums, toured globally (U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond), and delivered over 100 concerts at colleges, camp meetings, and rallies, blending humor, spiritual depth, and cultural edge to inspire joy and connection.
This artistic legacy mirrors Dr. Summerour’s patient-centered philosophy: empowering resilience through evidence-based, empathetic strategies that honor creativity’s healing power. Patients comment on his kindness, patience, and profound listening—“He connects on some level that gives real hope,” as one shared—building RPMG into a multidisciplinary haven of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurse practitioners, and therapists focused on whole-person care.
